The CogAT® (Cognitive Abilities Test®) Online & Iowa E Online Test
This combo is sold together, you do not need to purchase the Iowa E Online separately. Instructions for scheduling and setting up the CogAT7 online & Iowa E Online test can be found below. There will be 3 days of testing (CogAT day 1 and Iowa E online days 2 and 3.) that must be scheduled two weeks in advance. The CogAT Online for all levels as well as the Iowa Online for Grades K-2 requires audio. CogAT age norms begin at 4 years, 11 months. Six months is required between test events with the same test and grade level.
Test Type: Nationally Standardized Cognitive Abilities Test, multiple choice, fill-in-the-bubble
Purpose: To measure and learn about students’ general and specific reasoning abilities: To assess students’ abilities in reasoning and problem solving using verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal (spatial) symbols.
Grades: K-12 (Reading is not required of students using Levels 5/6, 7, or 8.)
Norms: 2017 National Norms
- Spring norms: Mar. 1 - July 31
- Fall Norms: Aug. 1 - Nov. 30
- Midyear Norms: Dec. 1 - Feb. 29
Please Note: Level 5 for a kindergartener can only be taken midyear (after Dec. 1st) or in the Spring. If ordering for a 1st grader in the fall please choose level 6; any other time of year choose level 7. If ordering for a 2nd grader in the fall please choose level 7, otherwise choose level 8.
Time: Approximately 95 minutes.
Scoring: Year-round by computer
Recommendations: Take it every two or three years
Administrator Requirements: Administered by Triangle Education Assessments. Can be done remotely at your location. No B.A. required of parent or gaurdian.
Restrictions: Can only be purchased by homeschool or small private school.
What is the CogAT?
The Cognitive Ability Test (CogAT) is a widely used group administered ability test. First developed and published in 1954 as the Lorge-Thorndike Intelligence test, it has been revised several times over the years. It is often used to identify gifted students and helps the parent understand their children’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses and learning styles. Free Report for Parents (click here).

The assessment consists of three batteries which measure three reasoning abilities: sequential reasoning, inductive reasoning, and quantitative reasoning.

Instructions for Scheduling the Iowa E/CogAT Online
After purchasing the Iowa E/CogAT7 Online Test for your location:
- A registration form will be emailed to you within 48 hours of your order but usually sooner.
- Complete and submit the form choosing your test dates and times. We must have this registration form in order to schedule your student. Please submit the registration form at least two weeks in advance of your preferred testing week. We will confirm your testing dates and time. Please note the norms below in order to request the correct grade:
-Tests taken March 1-July 31 will be normed for SPRING (so put the grade they currently in or finished)
-Tests taken August 1-November 30 will be normed for FALL (so put the grade they are going into or just started)
-Tests taken December 1-February 28 will be normed for WINTER
3. After we receive your registration form, we will email you confirmation of your testing dates and time.
Test Days: CogAT 7 & Iowa E Online Test at Your Location:
- We will email you the test session codes by 9:00 am EST for the tests that the student will complete on that day.
- The student will enter a test session code at www.riversideonlinetest.com. We will then approve the student for the session. (Please note that because we must approve the student for each session, it is very important that the schedule be followed in the order we give the codes. Please call us at 919-387-7004 if you are waiting approval for more than a minute or two.)
- Since the CogAT7 & Iowa E Online Remote is timed please make sure to take breaks between sessions if needed, not during a session.
- The Online test offers quick scoring. Upon completion of the tests, we will email the score report within 48 hours.
- Additional fees may apply if you need to test later in the day or for an additional day ($25/extra day). Once the test is set up there is a $15 fee to change dates or for a refund. No refund is given for cancellations less than 2 weeks prior to test date.
